Building a World Class Sustainable Aquaculture Industry in Sierra Leone
Our vision at Afraqua is to build a new model for sustainable, land-based aquaculture
in Africa – Blue Farming
.
We believe this needs to be multi-species, integrating seaweed cultivation, and minimizing
the use of unsustainable aqua feed.
Africa today accounts for less than 1%
of global aquaculture but 15% of global
population, forecast to rise to 25%.
In West Africa in particular there
is a high consumption of seafood.
Today, it is supplied by
unsustainable wild catch.
Sierra Leone
We selected Sierra Leone as our first project location because of its superb natural attributes and the country’s pressing food security needs. Sierra Leone also benefits from preferential market access to the US, EU, UK and ECOWAS
We will catalyse the Blue Revolution in Sierra Leone and help feed its expected population of 15 million in 2050 in a sustainable way
